HiTaS: A Heuristic Approach to Cell Suppression in Hierarchical Tables

چکیده

The views expressed in this paper are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the policies of Statistics Netherlands. This paper describes a heuristic approach to find suppression patterns in tables that exhibit a hierarchical structure in at least one of the explanatory variables. The hierarchical structure implies that there exist (many) sub-totals, i.e., that (many) sub-tables can be constructed. These sub-tables should be protected in such a way that they cannot be used to undo the protection of any of the other tables. The proposed heuristic approach has a top-down structure: when a table of high level (sub-)totals is suppressed, its interior turns into the marginals of possibly several tables on a lower level. These lower level tables are then protected while keeping the marginals fixed.

How to Make the T-ARGUS Modular Method Applicable to Linked Tables

The software package τ-ARGUS offers a very efficient algorithm for secondary cell suppression known as either HiTaS or the Modular approach. The method is well suited for the protection of up to 3-dimensional hierarchical tables. In practice, statistical agencies release multiple tabulations based on the same dataset. Usually these tables are linked through certain linear constraints. In such a...

Solving the Cell Suppression Problem on Tabular Data with Linear Constraints

Cell suppression is a widely used technique for protecting sensitive information in statistical data presented in tabular form. Previous works on the subject mainly concentrate on 2and 3-dimensional tables whose entries are subject to marginal totals. In this paper we address the problem of protecting sensitive data in a statistical table whose entries are linked by a generic system of linear c...

A Stochastic Search Approach to Solving the Cell Suppression Problem in 3-Dimensional Hierarchical Tables

Cell suppression is one method that is commonly used to reduce disclosure risk when data are published in hierarchical tables. A form of optimality is achieved for 2-dimensional tables by formulating the cell suppression problem as a minimum cost flow problem. There are issues with this approach in general, and for its application to 3-dimensional tables in particular. First, cell suppression i...

Network Flows Heuristics for Complementary Cell Suppression: An Empirical Evaluation and Extensions

Several network flows heuristics have been suggested in the past for the solution of the complementary suppression problem. However, a limited computational experience using them is reported in the literature, and, moreover, they were only appropriate for two-dimensional tables. The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, we perform an empirical comparison of two network flows heuristics. They...

Hierarchical Static Timing Analysis at Bull with HiTas

This paper describes the method used in the design of a 26 million transistors chip at BULL to verify the timing performance using the hierarchical timing analysis tool HiTas as well as the interactive path browser Xtas. Those tools have been designed at UPMC and are now commercialized by AVERTEC. The complexity is handled by partitioning the analysis according to the hierarchical partitioning ...
